Toshio Odate was born in Japan in 1930 and during the immediate post-war years served an apprenticeship as a maker of sliding doors. He went on to study art and design, and in 1958 was awarded a fellowship for the introduction of traditional Japanese woodworking in the United States, where he has remained.
Over the following four decades, Odate taught industrial design and sculpture at the university level, exhibited his own sculptures, and demonstrated Japanese woodworking techniques and attitudes at many workshops, classes and seminars throughout the U.S. and Europe. He has written articles for Fine Woodworking, American Woodworker, Woodwork and Woodshop News magazines, and is the author of Japanese Woodworking Tools: Their Tradition, Spirit and Use and Making Shoji. Odate has also been featured in several videos and television productions, including "Martha Stewart Living" and the "Woodwright's Shop." He currently resides in Woodbury, Connecticut.
Tedd Benson is considered by many to be the single individual most responsible for the timber frame revival in the 1970s. Besides being an author and occasional guest on "This Old House," his Benson Woodworking and Bensonwood Homes companies in New Hampshire have earned worldwide respect through sensitive and sensible management, design, construction and employment practices. He is a founding member of the Timber Framers Guild, and author of Building the Timber Frame House, The Timber Frame Home, and Timberframe. About Our Venue
For more than a century, the Samoset Resort has been considered the premier coastal resort location in Maine, renowned for spectacular and expansive views of Penobscot Bay and distant islands, with the soft Camden Hills rising to the east, and the spacious grounds of Jameson Point to the west. The original hotel, which was built in 1889 and serviced by the Maine Central Railroad, was destroyed by fire in 1972. It was replaced with a new hotel constructed almost entirely from the beautiful old timbers of a deserted granary, which was once a Portland, Maine landmark.
Travel ArrangementsThe Resort is located just outside of Rockport, Maine, 3½ hours north of Boston and 1½ hours north of Portland, Maine, on coastal Route 1. There are many direct flights available to the Portland International Jetport (PWM), and it is only a short beautiful ride up the coast in your rental car. Commuter service from Boston into nearby Knox County Airport (RKD) is through USAirways Express. Detailed directions are provided here and will be sent with your registration confirmation.
