Conference Programmer Will Beemer has given this one his all - and we think you'll be impressed by the breadth and depth of the program this Fall. Our Keynote Speaker, John Connell, will help to set the tone and provide some deep context in the evolving world of sustainable building. In addition to a solid pre-con line up (below) we have leavened the mix with the traditional excitments of a multi-track conference with special sidebars for Joint Busting, Children's Barn Raising, the usual shenanigans, and our first ever Job Fair. Featured Speaker - John ConnellJohn Connell will be discussing treehouses: the ultimate green structure. In designing and building these light-hearted structures, Connell discovers a deeper understanding of what it means to design and build sustainably. Lessons accrued from making treehouses for children in wheelchairs as well as for resort patrons with money to burn can and should be applied to the rest of our buildings. Embodied energy, siting, durability, water conservation, and many other “pat” green topics must be re-explored when building 25-35 feet in the air. Nuts & bolts, fun stories and some new insights will have attendees asking questions and quite possibly modifying the way they think about sustainable design and construction in their own practices. Our VenueExperience the unique Canadian tradition of Le Chateau Montebello...Le Chateau Montebello combines remarkable architecture with rustic elegance in a country resort of international renown. It is the largest log hotel in the world and features gourmet meals unequaled at past Guild conferences. In February 1930, the site where Fairmont Le Chateau Montebello now stands was just a clearing in the woods. In just 120 days, 5,000 carpenters erected the massive cedar chateau -- a construction feat that captured the popular imagination of the time, inspired newspaper features across North America and attracted crowds of onlookers.
Activities at Montebello include golf on a championship 18- hole course, mini-golf, fishing and boating on the Ottawa River, horseshoes, indoor tennis and squash, exercise room, saunas and swimming in the largest indoor pool in Canada. Multiple concurrent tracks during the main Conference are augmented by five pre-Conference Workshops on Thursday, October 28th, numerous special events, great food and a spectacular locale. 
Conference ArrangementsRoom reservations: Lodging is not included in your conference fee and must be booked with the hotel directly. Call the hotel at 800-441-1414 or 819-423-6341; be sure to mention you're with the Timber Framers Guild to get the special Conference rate. This rate is valid through 2 October. More than 100 people have booked already, (out of 211 rooms) so don't wait.You may also reserve online. Here's how: More than a few members have reported that the online registration does not produce the promised room rates. The Hotel says that this is not really happening. I recommend you stick to good old-fashioned telephone reservations.
This will lead to a selection of room types at the historic log hotel. Enter your personal information to complete your reservation. Rates are $119 US for a single or double occupancy, plus significant taxes. A third person sharing is an additional $25 US ($30 CAN) per night. Children 18 years old and under and sharing their parents' accommodation are complimentary. The hotel will add as much as 18% GST/HST plus a $7.25 CAN per room per day service charge. Some of these taxes may be rebatable on room charges for non-Canadians. If more than 75% of the conference registrants are non-Canadian, applications can be obtained at the hotel. We'll make sure these forms are available, either way. Travel Arrangements: Located on the Ottawa River, Le Chateau Montebello is 90 km east of the recommended Ottawa International Airport (YOW) and 120 km west of the Dorval International Airport - Montreal (YUL). A map and directions will be sent with other conference materials upon receipt of registration. Shuttle services from either airport may be obtained by calling Maestro Limo at 819-246-5081; however from our research, it appears that rental cars are much more affordable. The dream of
Swiss-American Harold Saddlemire, who dubbed it
“Lucerne-in-Quebec,” Fairmont Le Chateau Montebello was
inspired by the chateaux of the Swiss Alps. Craftsmen used 10,000 giant
cedar logs to build the resort's three main buildings, all cut and set
by hand. The central log chateau, which houses all the guest rooms in
the resort, has a three-story central atrium, at the heart of which
stands a massive six-sided stone fireplace.
