Although we will not require a certain skill level to take the Thinking Tangentially workshop, if you can answer the following questions easily and correctly, you will be well matched.

Problem 1:

For any regular plan regular pitch (eave corner 90 degrees and roof pitches are the same) 9 / 12 roof:

What is the ratio of common rafter length to run?

What is the ratio of hip rafter length to common rafter run?

Problem 2:

On your rafter square, locate the cut listed for 9 / 12 hip or valley side cut.

On which surface of the hip rafter is this drawn?

Which numbers on your square are used to draw this line ?

When drawing this information at the peak end of the hip rafter, which number is held toward the peak end of the hip?

Problem 3:

If a rafter has a pitch of 8 1/2 in 17, what is its length if the run is 12 feet?

What is the slope of this pitch in degrees?

Problem 4:

In a regular plan, regular pitch roof, what is the length of a hip rafter at the intersection of two roofs with a common rafter pitch of 10 in 12 and a run of 14 feet, 6 inches?
