Cuvilly Barn Survey, Dismantling & Re-Erection
Historic Barn Surveying/Dismantling, Apr 2627, 2002, Ipswich, Mass.
Repair-Raising Workshop, Jul 22–26, 2002
DESCRIPTION
The Cuvilly Arts and Earth Center is a working farm where children can experience the interdependence of life through models of ecological sustainability. This non-profit organization has been offered a beautifully preserved 19th century barn in nearby Danvers if they agree to move it and re-erect it.
We will organize a surveying expedition in April for those who wish to learn how to measure, survey, and document historic timber frames. The frame will then be dismantled and shipped to Ipswich. See the photos below of this workshop.
We will return in July to repair what is needed (mostly post feet) through scarfing, and then raise the barn in its new home. As much of the historic fabric as possible, including siding and windows, will be preserved by volunteers who will strip the structure before our survey in April.
