Thanks to Steve Smith for helping us with our church building program over the last 2+ years. We are still really having fun with the project. If you want to see what can be done with determination, hardwork, patience, community spirit and very little money (just the kind of building timberframing lends itself to best) you can see photos of the project at www.peacehill.org under photos. Now that things are winding down we would be delighted to give a helping hand to those in our area who need help with any worthwhile project. We have all the needed tools, some expertise and willing hearts. Thanks to TFG for this means of communication!

Hi, my name is Bob Davidson. I am in the planning stages of buiding a timber frame home. I have purchased a portable sawmill and am beginning to mill lumber and beams for materials. I am looking for information on building SIPs myself, to compare with obtaining them commercially and paying for shipping to Alaska. I've heard that there may be problems with de-laminating. Pros and Cons, anyone? I recommend this site highly, and have purchased the very informative "Timber Frame Joinery and ..." from the Guild. It makes a great reference for a starting point. I have also found very useful info on the Cascade Joinery and Goshen web sites. Also, can someone please explain what "wrap and strap" frame enclosure is? Thank you. Bob Davidson rrbob@alaska.net

Advancing the standard industrial equipment with the purpose of simplification of manufacturing processes, decreasing of terms of manufacturing of articles(workpieces), manufacturing of nonstandard unique articles(workpieces). THE DIPLOMAS The diploma about the termination(ending) of a pedagogical school. The diploma about the termination(ending) PTC. The certificate about the termination(ending) of courses of the English language. The diploma about the termination(ending) of courses of the accountants. The driver's license with the right of activity on hiring. Knowledge of languages In 1999 I finished the three monthly courses of the English language. About my experience In 1991 I returned from Army and entered the F&S corporation (father and sons) as a schoolboy of the joiner. The corporation was engaged in manufacturing of upholstered suite, body furniture, made straight lines of a window and door from natural timber. The same year I arrived in a vocational school to receive a speciality of the joiner - carpenter. I studied, and after study i worked in the corporation. In 3-4 months i was permitted to make a crew of doors for the 3-rd room flat independently. After that I already worked as the joiner. During all activity in this corporation I made very many windows and doors, upholstered suite, children's rooms, kitchen's corner myself. Basically, the customers were the private persons. Sometimes they were schools, banks, even 2 churches and Mohammedan's house. The corporation was small, there were: 12 foremans - joiners. In the corporation there were no engineers, each foreman, including my, executed(designed) the bookings independently. On my example. .. I went to the customer home, brought him the photos of the samples of my doors. I made the draft of the future joiner's articles(workpieces)on the basis of the liked doors, demonstrated to the customer and after the consent, started activity. Independently i picked up a forest, previously dried. Calculated all parts of the future doors and started manufacturing. All operations on machine tools (trimmer, woodworking planer, reysmuse the machine tool, milling machine, grinder) I executed(designed) independently. In these times the specifity of the bookings was pursuant to the Russian architecture - square standard windows and doors and the orders were the same. I began to offer to tender styles of doors from the foreign catalogs, more and more people started to book more interesting things, in the art schedule, door and window. Approximately since 1993 the demand for arch (round) windows and doors has appeared. I was interested in new outlooks in this schedule and has become to search in the literature on joiner's works for know-how of manufacturing of these articles (workpieces). But alas … In our industry it was not let out. Talking with the old experimental foremans, I have come to a conclusion (injection), that the manufacturing of arch articles(workplaces) very labor-consuming and consequently unprofitable process (probably for this reason in our corporation was not found of any foreman of having desire to adjust extension(issue) of arch articles(workpieces) (ÀA)). I decided to make it. On my drawings at a plant of hardware some milling cutters specially for manufacturing ÀA were made. Then I perfected(improved) a milling machine for activity with an opened milling cutter. I elaborated a system of calculation ÀÈ, and brand new know-how of manufacturing ÀA, which one has allowed to reduce in tens time all costs, thus the quality was increased on some orders and the activity has gone. It took me 1 month for it. In 1994 we have decided to construct in shop the drying chamber (before we dried a forest by a natural image). On my delineations we also have constructed it (chamber of a convection type,) the Chamber was received with good technological parameters(indexes): mean temperature 65C'. Moisture from air, which one was heated by electric heaters, was taken with the help of refrigerating radiators, which one were established on paths of an airflow coming from of the drying chamber and saturated moisture. The moisture caked on cold radiators and flew off downwards. Approximately in the same time the corporation began to make stairways from a natural tree for private houses. The balusters were indispensable in a large volume. We had large industrial lathe on metal in the shop. On it I turned all equipment for a copy-turning attachment for manufacturing of balusters. For a few minutes I transformed a lathe on metal into a lathe on a tree. With the help by this simple attachment baluster were received absolutely identical, and is much faster (it is absolutely not necessary to control the sizes - it takes a lot of time). In our criminal country there was all worse and worse to producers. Jumbo taxes (from 1 dollar in taxes there left 97%), banditry, duties on the part of different state controlling bodies (organs). At the end corporation was closed and has stopped the existence. But there was a huge experience and desire to live. In 1996 I and my father (a teacher at school) we bought under the waste prices old collapsed woodworking machines. We restored them and revamped for the know-hows. We established all the equipment in a uninhabited part of my father's private house. And we have been working there now. On today we alone in our city the producers ÀA. We work on " to the Testimony on personal labor activity " . That's All. The padding information I am sociable, I adapt in activity easily. I aspire to keep abreast of new know-hows. I like to improve my knowlidge. I very much hope, that my business qualities will be interesting for you.

Just wanted to say that I saw the episode of Nova last night, "Medieval Siege", and was amazed at the construction of the trebuchet! I believe I recognize some of the names from the show in your list of guild members, and wanted to congratulate you on the success of such an extraordinary project. It was truly fascinating to watch.

Howdy, With regard to the Jack Witherington's January 24 inquiry about switching his career to the timber framing field, I can't help but offer this advice that I heard from Jeff Arvin of the Cascade Joinery: "First, marry a doctor". After that you might want to join the Guild. It's just $75 cheap. Good luck, Terry Johnson

Hello! I just watched the program on PBS about the trebuchet. Superb program, fabulous skills! I'm hoping someone who reads this will contact me about an architectural restoration involving large timber trusses. I am president of the board of a Montgomery, Alabama-based non-profit called Old Alabama Rails (though I live in Minnesota). We have been working to restore and reconstruct the former Western Railway of Alabama Car & Engine Shops there and to develop a significant southeastern transportation museum. The oldest building on the site, built in 1901, is about 68’x198’ in area. Most of the roof and one wall have collapsed. Inside, on the floor are a number of magnificent timber trusses (two remain aloft). The main horizontal piece of each (8-10 of them) seems to be made of 14”x14” timbers about 66’ long. We plan to restore this building. I would personally prefer to see as many of the timber trusses reused as possible, or else an authentic restoration of the trusses using new wood accomplished. However, there is some sentiment on my board for a faux restoration of the timbers. I'm a bit of a purist, so I'd like to avoid the faux solution. I’d like to know to whom I could send photograph scans or photos, become in contact with regarding possibilities of the involvement of members of your guild (the trusses are held together with steel and iron, not wood) to advise me and inform me of our options. This information could help me to assemble a rationale for a proper restoration. Thanks for any help or advice you can give. Sincerely, Andrew Waldo President of the Board Old Alabama Rails Montgomery, Alabama http://www.oldalabamarails.org virgiliano@msn.com

My children and I enjoyed watching you work on the Nova Trebuchet Project. We would like to try out our own model. We have been interested in engineering for some time and this looks like a fun project to get started with. You must have had a great time there in Scotland, building a full scale trebuchet. We enjoyed Nova's presentaion and your humor. You looked like you enjoyed your last night and celebrated your triumph with the full moon. Thanks again for your part in the presentation. Julie

Our family is interested in building a second home. We are leaning towards a mountain property near our existing residence so we can use on weekends and holidays. Eventually, we plan to retire to the home. We have begun a collection of sample buildings that will from the foundation for our future plan. We hope that over time the samples will give us a good starting point to architect our dream home. We would like to get suggestions about relevant sources we can read to get more ideas. If someone knows a reference book(s) that show the exterior and / or interior elevations / finishedproduct please let us know. We are also looking to build this home with the detail in mind. We want the architecture of the home to provide the warmth and beauty of the house not the furniture. Large exposed beams are important. Thanks

I am working on a restoration of an 1870's farmhouse which contains the remnants of an 1853 German Lutheran school which was timber frame. We are looking for a local timber framer with historical expertise to give us some advice on how the inside and outside wall finishing might have looked.
