( Circa 1750 ) The setting I would like would be a diorama of a cabinet shop complete with work bench, lumber rack, tools and wood shavings on the floor. What I would like to know is joinery techniques, timber sizes, basically all the construction details to build a miniature building. I would appreciate any advice, drawings, or references you would offer. I am wanting to contact re-erectors of salvaged barns and buildings in the mid-West and West coast. Are any of your members involved in this practice? Our company, Renovators Resource, located in Halifax, Nova Scotia, is currently dismantling century-old buildings, primarily small wood-frame (some hand-hewn) churches. We have dismantled a few barns, though would be interested to work with timberframers who are also involved in dismantling and rebuilding. Thanks for you help in this matter. I can be contacted at jennifer@renovators-resource.com or at our toll-free number 1-877-230-7700. Our website can be seen at www.renovators-resource.com Jennifer Corson President, Renovators Resource Inc. Jennifer Corson <jennifer@renovators-resource.com> Halifax, NS Canada - Friday, May 12, 2000 at 13:57:03 (EDT) I live in Eastern Oregon and have an old livery stable (about 100 years old) on my property and am interested in having the wood salvaged. Could you please tell my how to get a hold of someone who knows about the salvaging of old wood? Some of the planks and beams in this two-story barn are larger than 18", and I would hate for them to go to the dump. Thanks much! Rebecca Reber, kreber@ucinet.com Rebecca Reber <kreber@ucinet.com> Imbler, OR USA - Friday, May 12, 2000 at 10:42:28 (EDT) If there is anyone out there with knowledge pertaining to a solution to a serious structural problem in a very heavy 137 year old timber truss please reply. the problem is as follows:The truss spans 45 feet, and supports the ceiling and spire of a church. It is constructed with 12 by 14 hand hewn pine and oak timbers This truss carries a very heavy load, and was standing up quite well until the dovetail on the one end that is mortised into the plate began to deteriorate due to dampness and dry rot. I have inspected the condition of the timber back for approx 4 feet by probing with a 1\4" drill, and found dry rot yet at this location. Can the dry rot be stopped, and can the timber be reinforced and strengthened by injecting epoxy into the interior? I know the process has been used in the rebuilding of badly decomposed beams that had to be strengthened in place, but is it feasible here? The end of the truss now has settled about 2 " and seems to be stabilized, but why I don't really know because the rot is inside the support of the 30" stone wall. I suspect the spire of the church is being supported by the roof somewhat. Please reply if you are interested in helping out this congregationThans in advanceRichard richard Casselman <richardc@mor-net.on.ca> morrisburg , ontario canada - Wednesday, May 10, 2000 at 20:18:09 (EDT) Looking for Timberframe contractors to dismantle and reconstruct a 4 story 55' x 75' Historic Monitor barn in Richmond, Vermont. Starting from Anglo Saxon times to the present day. At the moment I am looking for information on Cruck Frame Construction - which is, of course, a form of timber frame building. I have spent quite some time looking through your site, it is really interesting. Like you I also have a love for timber.Although I now teach construction studies, I did start like as a carpenter and joiner. My dad was also a carpenter and joiner, eventually operating his own business as a house builder, sadly he died some years ago.I was in America a few years ago, New England to be exact and was impressed with the fantastic use that you people put timber to.Its mainly bricks and concrete over here. Although more timber frame houses are being built, but generally with a brick outer skin. Anyway thanks for the interesting read of your web-site. Its one that I have bookmarked for the future. I'm a new guy at timber framing but I think that will change very quickly in the next year or so. I am graduating from Virginia Tech's Wood Products degree program in December and I hope to jump out into the world of ancient woodcraft. Anyway, I just joined the Guild recently and am very happy to find so many enthusiasts out there. Hope to meet you all at some events very soon.
