I need a source as close as possible to the Dallas, TX area for some rough cut timbers for a home I am about to start building. Can you refer me to any sawmills within a couple of hundred miles. We recently bought a circa-1830 timber frame house. We're looking for a general contractor who has experience with older timber framed houses-- while we don't expect to require significant structural repairs, there is work that needs to be done in the short term (ceiling replacement, etc) and we'd like to have someone who knows what they're doing with this stuff. The general contractors we've talked to so far are okay, but none have particular experience with older houses or timber frame construction. Failing that, we'd also be interested in hearing from folks who would be able to provide a structural analysis of the house, at least, to get a better handle on what sort of shape we're in. Thanks -- Denis Haskin <Denis.Haskin@bigfoot.com> Lexington, MA USA - Monday, September 25, 2000 at 21:48:33 (EDT) I am a frame Carpenter Contractor [Conventional Plate and Stud] and have been doing this for approximatly 30 years I have also been Priveledged to have been associated with several Timber Frame jobs over the years. I believe that I understand the basics of the Timber Frame very well. Unfortunately some of the homeowners I have had to deal with over the years have had no such knowlege. I have come close to blows with several , and no dought will again , in trying to convey just the basics of support and bearing for a Timber Frame. I would like to know if there is a data base for timber frame engineering basics anywhere on the internet. I think there is a very great lack of information even among timber and log home companies. Thank you for any and all information Bruce Montney <montney@flash.net> Waterford, MI USA - Thursday, September 21, 2000 at 18:21:06 (EDT) I am a frame Carpenter Contractor [Conventional Plate and Stud] and have been doing this for approximatly 30 years I have also been Priveledged to have been associated with several Timber Frame jobs over the years. Both are quite nice and in unrestored operational condition. One is unbranded the second is an AJAX brand and comes with a large bit. I am not a framer, nor a tool dealer, just someone who would like to see these fine tools find their way to someone who can appreciate them. I would hope to be offered a fair price and would also appreciate any guidance someone can offer. I prefer to sell them to someone who will use them and not to a dealer. If you know anyone interested, please have them contact me. I have digital pictures available. Nice and interesting site while I´m working with timberconstructions daily in the beautiful little city of Röros in Norway. Right now I´m a little bit into whipsawing, you know two or sometimes three people making planks and boards (?) with a long handsaw. Have tried a few different kinds and would very much like to know about the tradition of whipsawing around the world. My collected knowledge so far is from scandinavian litterature, but I know that the technique has been used pretty much all over the World. So, if anybody anywhere knows anything about the history of making, using or sharpening the tool, please contact me. Maybe someone have pictures and even better, own experience? Thank´s and I hope to hear from You! I have 100 native Minnesota White pine logs that were cut harvested 12 months ago and need a new home. The average log is 60 feet long, 24" diameter butt, 10" diameter tip, 200 growth rings. A 2 story farmhouse near where I livehas been offered "free" by the owner, to be removed from his farm. The home is framed with hand cut timbers and appears solid. The inside walls are wallpaper, paneling, and god only knows what's under all that! The floors are random width pine, the ones I saw were beautiful. I got into the attic and saw a top of a post, had a joist peggd to it. Looks like a hardwood. I've heard of people in my locale (New York) who have exposed frames and found them to be beautiful Chestnut, Oak, or other hardwoods that were plentiful in this area. This frame is a buried treasure ! I'm looking for anyone who has done this kind of project, and would enjoy hearing about your experience. Good and bad! The home was built in 1834, and I fell in love with it at first sight. The owner will most likely have it burned down by the local fire dept. if no one wants it, a terrible waste of history. Please respond with your stories. Thank You ! This wood naturaly knarly and beautiful and perfect for us for bird perches and bird stands. If anyone knows where I might find these supliers I'd sure appreciate it. (we typically sandblast the natural branches and then bolt them as they are to either a floor base or table top base) Also if you know of any other type of wood that is naturaly tough and would serve as good perches for birds, I'd appreciate knowing what that wood is. We are in the process of completing ours after ten years of dreaming, two years of very hard work, and five months devoted to salvaging a barn. By the grace of God, we followed a path that started with helping an aquaintance to insulate a summer kitchen on a late-18th century farm, proceeded to watching, taping, and studying EVERY show of the 1989 "This OLD HOUSE" barn raising project, continued with trips to and visits with various timberframe craftsmen, and ended with finding the right people to work with us. We are very happy with the result! If there is a caveat to our experience, it is to learn all that you can, build the house in your head a hundred times over, and forge ahead! I would not want to live in anything else! If there are those that would like to correspond to gain the benefit of our experiences, I would be happy to offer assistance where I can.
