I was raised in Chicago and attended Illinois Institute of Technology and Stanford University during my 12-year journey toward a master’s degree in civil engineering. On the way, I completed an apprenticeship in carpentry and practiced in Oregon, Virginia, Washington, DC, and Chicago. After graduating from Stanford in 1986, I worked as a project engineer for Owens Corning before joining Riverbend Timber Framing, becoming their director of operations and a director and treasurer of the Timber Framers Guild. I returned to Owens Corning in 1991, where I spent the next eleven years in a wide variety of engineering, science, and management roles and traveled all over the United States and western Europe.
In 2003, I returned to timber framing as Cascade Joinery’s general manager, extending that company’s success in the design and crafting of timber frames for the Pacific Northwest. In 2006, I left that magnificent corner of the country to start, with my friend and business partner Ben Brungraber, Fire Tower Engineered Timber, a company that quickly established itself as a leader in heavy timber design and engineering. Never one to sit still, I worked with FraserWood Industries in a business, product, and market development role from 2009 through 2014. I am now president of the Guild, and my portfolio includes the Guild’s community building program among many other duties.
