Workshop at Hancock Shaker Village Part 2

Raising

The timber framing class at Hancock Shaker Village prepares to raise the first of 5 bents.

1st bent
The students easily lift the first bent.

bent up
The first bent goes up, and Jack Sobon uses the Commander to coax the tenon into place.

2nd bent
The second bent is easily lifted into place.

Curved brace
Two curved braces grace the third bent.

3rd bent
The third bent is easily lifted into place.

3rd bent



2nd plate
The second plate is handed up in advance of the rafters.

1st rafter
Jack Sobon secures the first rafter pair.

Rafters
Three of the rafters are in place.

Last peg
The last peg is pounded in.

Ceremonial bush
The ceremonial bush marks the end of another successful raising.
