The Timber Framers Guild will partner with the Collinsville Illinois Area Recreation District (CARD) and Trillium Dell Timberworks in a project to repair and re-assemble the historic 36' x 85' Gindler Barn at a TFG workshop scheduled for July 7-19 at Willoughby Farm, Collinsville, Illinois. In addition, if there is sufficient interest and for a separate charge, the Guild will offer three classes of OSHA-compliant training to participants in scaffold, fork lift and aerial lift use. Tuition for the two-week workshop is $350, including meals and campsite. Tuition may be waived for professional timber framers and/or individuals who have participated in previous TFG projects. If seeking a tuition waiver, please provide a résumé, including a list of TFG projects (if applicable). The 19th century Gindler Barn was donated to CARD in 2007; it will be the second restored barn to be re-erected at Willoughby Farm. CARD oversees more than 400 acres of parkland and provides recreational programs and special events for the community. As part of this program, CARD purchased the 40-acre Willoughby Farm, a community fixture in the Collinsville area since the 1900s and one of the last significant tracts of open space along the Collinsville bluff line. CARD plans to make Willoughby Farm into a living history farmstead and a real working Midwestern farm as it was in the 1920s to 1950s. Another goal is for visitors to gain appreciation for the outdoors while hiking or strolling on interpretive trails in the conservation area. The farm area is 10 acres and the conservation reserve area is 30 acres. Willoughby Farm will also demonstrate and promote sustainability practices of the era and how those same values can play a significant role in protecting the environmental investments of our present and future. Willoughby Farm is located on a secluded hilltop farmstead 15 miles northeast of St. Louis. You can find more information about CARD at www.collinsvillerec.com. |

The Gindler Barn is a hewn oak barn dating from the mid-1800s with a roof system of white pine dating from the 1870s. The barn is approximately 36' x 85' with 12' side walls and a gable roof. The frame is built from hewn oak 6x6s. The Guild will reproduce the hewn oak frame, integrating and restoring some of the original members such as the 52' long purlin plates. The hay mow floor system (joists and planks) will be installed in panels, as will several of the interior bents that were removed with sheathing and other original fabric intact. In addition to standard raising and lifting techniques, this project poses an opportunity to explore the challenges and benefits of whole-assembly raising techniques.
The Gindler Barn is a notable example of a Midwestern barn precisely because it is more a response to available materials and agricultural trends than to prescribed ethnic and cultural construction standards. It was a working barn reflecting the diverse Midwestern farming practices of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Specifically, this barn was used to feed cattle, house horses, thresh grain, milk cows, and store grain, hay and wagon, all under one roof. This multi-function barn epitomizes the now distant family farm and, as such, is an important example of Midwestern agrarian architecture.
Specifically, the July event will demonstrate:
With the assistance of the local coordinating contractor, Trillium Dell Timberworks, the Guild hopes to complete most of the frame reproduction and raising in this two-week event.

The workshop will be held on site at Willoughby Farm, beginning Sunday, July 6, with the arrival of the leadership team (Joel McCarty, Rocco Bellebuono, Kevin Brennan, Isaac McCoy-Sulentic and Tom Haanen). We are planning for 12 TFG members, two or more full-time CARD interns and up to 8 employees of Trillium Dell Timberworks. The workshop training will start on Monday, July 7, at 8 a.m. and run through Saturday, July 19. Participants and the leadership team will depart by Sunday, July 20. Workdays will begin at 7:00 a.m. with coffee, rollout and daily briefing.
Participants should bring a tool kit. The Guild will supply a recommended list of tools for participants to bring. Participants who want to help with the high work should bring their own fall protection harness. All participants will be required to sign an injury waiver, and will be requested to sign a photo waiver. Electric tools will be subject to inspection.
A guided tour of local timber frame barns and other historic structures by historical archaeologist Annie Rieken will take place on Sunday, July 6. The tour will cost $40 and will include transporation and dinner. Please reserve your spot when you register for the workshop. See this page for more information.
