Day 14 Report

At right: Hanging out under the forebay of the old Hertzler Barn. Soon we will be hanging out under the forebay of the new Hertzler-Chamberlin Barn (although it may be hard to find a sweater like that).

This photo is from the Collection of the George Rogers Clark Heritage Association (www.grcha.org), who have generously allowed us the run of their Gathering House.

  1. Brian Beals and Don Seela still making shims for the deck. The laser level revealed what we predicted; the 25-foot long forebay joists have a memory, curving downward nearly two inches after a century of supporting the long exterior wall.
  2. Laser and adze: both tools used in the reconstruction of this barn, only one in its creation.
  3. Apprenticeville. Our feelings were doubly hurt when the apprentices set up camp away from our big top circus, and we realized that they were closer to the showers and the dining hall, too.
  4. At sundown, brother and sister Rusty and Cindy spent considerable time trying to accustom one of these horses to blackpower gunfire. The horses seemed to do pretty well, but we jumped every time.

One man's dream
