Crawford Barn Raising: Preparations
Thursday is practice day for the team of workers with the Longaberger Construction Co. and the Guild timber framers to meet, work together as they will over the weekend, and do a trial run of raising two of the six bents (shown in action in the first photo below). The team of magnificent dappled draft horses join them to do their part in the lifting. Although the day begins cool with a red sunrise, the sun soon emerges to shine on the effort.

The group meet first thing Thursday morning to learn of the weekend's plans and their team assignments: rigging, roofing, timber spotting, and so forth.
The draft horses harnessed to the capstan.

The first of six bents from the original barn, raised again into position as part of the trial run. The two bents raised into position today will be taken down so that on Saturday, four bents will be raised at scheduled times of the day. Some 30,000 visitors are expected to visit the Homestead over the weekend and enjoy the festivities.
After the bent rises higher than the lifters can reach, others with pike poles take over the lifting, with the horses and rigging pulling the bent into place.
