Crawford Barn Raising: Sunday
Another day dawns, and we know it will be even hotter than Saturday. We expect a slower day, since we'll be raising bents 5 and 6 in the morning, then breaking by mid-afternoon to remove the scaffolding, clean up and prepare the barn for the barn dance in the evening. The crowds are smaller, but are more interested in the horse and timber framing demonstrations, since there's no hope of carrying away a prized basket today.
There are antique tool demonstrations, carriages on display, a petting zoo, presentation by a horse whisperer, and bluegrass music by Northwest Territory and by country music singer LaDonna Gatlin. Work continues on the 16 x 20 timber frame pavilion built by timber framers as a demonstration of mortise and tenon joinery; it will be donated by Longaberger to a state park for possible use as a shelter.
Key: (1) John MacFarland, PA, describes the pavilion being built by the timber framers. (2) Martin Meiss, NY, hews a log with an axe. (3) Martin makes pegs. (4) Layout and cutting of the mortises in the shade, as observers ask questions. (5) The barn in preparation for bent 5 to be raised. (6, 7, 8) Bent 5 is being raised. (9, 10, 11) The sixth and final bent being raised into place. (12) Laura Saeger being interviewed by a TV station. (13) The barn awaiting the dedication ceremony. (14) The traditional tree topping ceremony. (15) Another tradition: a group portrait of participating timber framers. (16, 17) The crowds entering the barn for the festive barn dance.
