The Highland Fling
Monday, November 2 continued

MONDAY: Our last day. We proved the fixed trebuchet will fly straight and true, and it seems like only a matter of time before the castle wall will be destroyed. Renaud Beffeyte, who designed the hinged trebuchet, dearly wants to test his design, and the timber framers will work all day to try to get it assembled. They must leave by the afternoon, in time to pack, eat dinner, and board the all-night bus to London/Gatwick Airport.

The COW boys, too, have delayed their departure, originally from Wed., and Bill Keir insists they must leave after the firing this morning.

Key: (126, 127) The two machines at rest. (128) A close-up of the hinged machine. (129) The fixed machine being readied for firing. (130) Joel McCarty and Susan Norlander atop the castle wall for a good view of the firing. (131) The ball is released (the dark blur in the center of the photo is the projectile). (132) The ball just as it is to hit the hoardings (the wooden roof) on the castle wall (look for the dark round object between the 2 flags). (133) A hit: The ball and the damage inflicted on the hoardings. (134) The COW boys and Joel McCarty (in metal hat): Steve Lawrence, Richard Archard, Bill Keir, and Paul Price. (135) Martin Graham and Marc Louw, who models his prize Nessie hat bestowed the evening before.
