The Highland Fling
Thursday, October 29 continued
THURSDAY: The messy, but critical, job of melting the lead and forming it in the molds continues. When completed, the massive 7 tons of lead will need to be fitted on the fixed machine. A filming sequence takes place with Sidney Alford, the Greek fire expert, setting off noxious smoke and a wooden tower decorated with deer skin. It's not clear how all this fits in. But the smoke and rain and mud all combine to make a strange brew.

Key: (77) Dave Dauerty hews lead, a noxious job requiring a face mask. (78, 79) Ellen Gibson and Laura and Rick Brown of Mass College of Fine Art, Dave Dauerty and Andy Smith all help with melting the lead and pouring the molten lead into the molds. (80) 7 tons of lead stacked ready to serve as the weight on the fixed arm. (81) Metallica: Our heavy metal band and lead pouring team of Laura Brown, Ellen Gibson, Andy Smith, and Rick Brown. (82) Wil Wilkins, blacksmith from Montana, and his forge become very popular late in the day, as the warmest place to stand. (83, 84) A filming sequence in which a wooden tower (right) is dragged toward the castle wall. The rain pours down making the whole area in front of the wall a sea of mud. (85) From the back of the castle wall, pullers on the rope pull the tower toward the wall, as Sidney above shoots arrows. (86) About 15 timber framers roll the fixed arm in place for raising in the morning. (87) Moon rising over Urquhart Castle.
