Workshop Report: Raising

Raising leader Isaac McCoy Sulentic (OR) dressed in the signature TFG crane director’s vest gets his mind right for the raising while Jeff Thususka (BC) works on his fall and tool restraints.

Charlie Kenny, LISEC treasurer and indefatigable project booster/ facilitator, gives the story, to the man from the New York Times. Our work site (on the skating rink) is to the left of the handsomely refurbished original Bayles boat shed building, which has been transformed into a community center.

Three sets of three trusses each await raising. Three more tiny trusses make up the monitor, lowered into place not too far off the ground for a 12 point landing (6 posts down and 6 rafter ends up).

First wall gliding into position, guided by Neil Godden (MA) and a large cast. Weather continues to deteriorate. Although the harbor, filled with boats, is less than 100 yards away, it is completely obscured by fog. At least it's not raining.

The weather got worse, as parts glided into their magnificently robust anchor plates . . .

As the raising rolled along, the weather improved for a time. Here the second set of trusses is lowered onto the tie beams.

Right: With the weather improving, Dave Petrina (BC), on the scaffolding, fits one of the wild edge braces with the help of the crane, Neil Godden (MA, in orange) and Denny Hambruch (NY, in green).

Left: Guild Co-Executive Director Will Beemer, who put this project together, traveled from Massachusetts to help with the raising (and the music).
