Workshop Report: Part 5

Small world stories are part of the Guild tradition. In 1995 the Guild held a workshop on Maine's Greens Island, in which workshop participants used only hand tools to build a boat house (a "naust") out of driftwood. The second story involves Lance Lee, co-founder of Atlantic Challenge and long-time Guild friend.

The fellow pictured below, Mark Jackson, lives next to Greens Island, and helped build the naust. He's been the shop teacher at Vinalhaven (Maine) High School for about 8 years. Thanks to the connections made by Lance Lee, Ed Levin, Curtis Milton and other Guild members over the years, Mark and student Phil Hopkins interrupted their phase one sail to Chesapeake Bay to work with us on the Bayles Boat House project for a week.

Teacher Mark Jackson (left) and Vinalhaven High senior Phil Hopkins. Phil and Mark are three weeks into the first leg of their six-week journey on the Freya.

Mark's high school team has been working on building the Freya for some years, culminating in a year-long cruise of the eastern coast with a succession of students.

Today we saw Mark and Phil and the Freya head out to sea, with bright skies and a strong wind, on their way to Hell's Gate. We are sorry to see them go, but we are pleased to be a small part of their adventure. The boat is so beautiful and their story so compelling, they had better check for stowaways.
