The weather has been cooperating since the commencement of
the build over one week ago and we are ahead of schedule. The back wall has
been assembled on the foundation slab and the cross bracing was cut
this afternoon. The timbers for the west end of the building have been
cut and preassembled. The first three roof trusses -- consisting of a 23 ft
cross beam, roof rafters, tie and two queen posts -- were raised today near the
foundationand ready to be lifted. The joinery for seven remaining trusses are
now being worked on.
There are more than 30 framers working on the site. The crew
starts early at 7 am with breakfast served by the hospitality crew. This is
followed by a hot lunch and dinner. The meals are delicious and the volunteers
from the community who are helping Kathy O. are wonderful -- always a
cheerful smile and willing attitude regardless of the hour.
The Timber Framers Guild instructors and volunteers are first
rate and a great bunch of guys from around the U.S., Canada and England.
They are patient, tireless and true craftsmen who love their work. They are
a varied bunch, including a former math teacher, mill operator, tool manufacturer,
retired lawyer, banker, timber framers, and foreign aid worker.
After eight days of
work, we broke this morning for paired canoe races in the harbor.
Watching two grown men capsize a canoe and a stern paddler perform a belly
flop in the bottom of the canoe while effecting a running launch was great
fun.
Come and visit us for a personal tour of the work site.

Dave Petrina (bow) and Randy Churchill pull hard for the beach. The
winners and the other soggy canoers will remain shrouded in mystery.
