Upper Arlington Timber Frame Barn Restoration and Raising

Upper Arlington, Ohio September 17-26, 2010

Rideshare/Roomshare Follow this link to the Forums, where we've started a thread for this purpose.

This is Partnership between the Upper Arlington Community Foundation and the City of Upper Arlington Parks & Recreation Department, and the TFG

Briefly, we'll repair and hand-raise an historic frame, assemble and mechanically raise a new frame.

Leadership Team includes Tom Cundiff, Bob Smith, Ric Beck, with Dan Troth as the 'fixer'

  • Logistics—Upper Arlington Ohio is an enclave of the City of Columbus, home of Ohio State. We’ve been working through local Guild members on this project for a couple of years, and now the push has come to shove.

The address is 4395 Carriage Hill Lane, Upper Arlington, Ohio

The historic barn dates from the early-to-middle 1800s, and is believed to be the community’s oldest remaining farm structure.

The barn was originally constructed on the Legg family farm in the area of Fishinger and Romnay roads. It was later purchased and moved to the Davidson family farm – its most recent location – on Lane Road when the original barn burned down. Over the years, the structure has undergone several additions, likely using parts saved from the McCoy barn. It was used as recently as the mid 1960s to house cattle and sell eggs to local residents.

The timber-framed barn is a prime example of how barns in Central Ohio were constructed during the 1800s, with the main timbers hand hewn. Experts from the Friends of Ohio Barns have evaluated the condition of the barn and confirmed it is in remarkably good shape for a barn of this age.

The Lane Road property owners were planning to build a new home on the site, and donated the barn to the City of Upper Arlington in 2008 to assure the survival of this historically significant structure. It was carefully dismantled, catalogued and put in storage in readiness for future relocation to a community park upon completion of a fundraising campaign.

Sunny 95 Park has been identified as the perfect location for the barn, both as the community’s newest park and because space has been identified for a year-round, reservable center for community activities and outdoor performance space.

In addition to preserving an important piece of Upper Arlington’s history by restoring the barn, the campaign will give the community a new legacy, to be enjoyed by generations of families for many years to come.

The completed facility will provide a unique and picturesque gathering place within Sunny 95 Park, ideal for receptions, club meetings, community education programs, business retreats, summer concerts and more.

The all-season structure will feature approximately 3,700 square feet of indoor space, with restrooms and a catering kitchen. This area will seat up to 140 people banquet style, 200 theater style and up to 120 in a classroom format. An attached outdoor, 950 square foot covered stage will open onto a graded amphitheater allowing for musical and theatrical performances. The barn will also be flanked on each side by an attractive patio overlooking a pond, and a beautiful sensory garden.

Upon its completion, the facility will be gifted to the City of Upper Arlington’s Parks & Recreation Department – for oversight, scheduling and long-term care and maintenance – becoming one of the community’s public gems for use and enjoyment by all.

This event should be styled predominately as a Rendezvous/Project, in that we will be teaching all the time, but we do have two structures to build.

Two independent timber frames are to be assembled into one structure in a ten day volunteer event. The first frame is a historic frame measuring 20x30 in plan. This frame needs extensive restoration and beam replacement before standing. Upon completion of repairs this frame will be lifted by hand. The second frame is new, measuring 32 x60 in plan, fabricated and delivered to the site prior to the volunteer event Vermont Timber Works (VTW) ready for assembly. We anticipate a simple but large scale mechanical raising on this one; lots of power equipment.

We will involve participants in professional-level ‘rehabilitation carpentry’ on the small frame, and best-practice rigging, raising and safe site management on the big frame. Participants will be free to move back and forth between frames as our needs and your interests dictate. We expect to be teaching 100% of the time. We will be working in the following curriculum areas, but we will NOT be providing Journeyworker or Apprentice trainings at field events in 2010 - that's a goal for 2011. (Some Journeyworker training will be available at the Montebello Conference)

As with all TFG fields events, daily safety and progress meetings, personal protective equipment, and good behavior are mandatory. In return we warrant an excellent experience in community building, and highest quality timberframing.

Travel info— Google Maps can get you there no problem, just a bit north and west of Columbus. Food and lodging will be provided, though camping will be the norm. Susan Norlander has prepared an extensive packet of information for participants – she will be happy to exchange that for a completed registration form.

There is NO CHARGE for participation in this event. We promise to keep you safe, to challenge and engage you, and to put you in the company of the best people we know.

Looking forward to working with you . . .

Please complete and submit the electronic form. Print a copy for your records, and we're good to go!
