Selman Memorial Pavilion RendezvousCity Commons Park, Angola, IndianaJune 13-25, 2005 Join experienced Guild members and aspiring timber framers in pastoral northeastern Indiana for the raising of a large public park structure.
The Selman Memorial Pavilion is a major effort of the Angola Department of Parks and Recreation in memory of the late Mayor Edwin W. “Bill” Selman Jr. The pavilion is a very large, though not overly complex, timber frame structure measuring 40' x 100'. The project will begin on a well-prepared site in town with help from the participants in May's two-week Best Shop Practices Professional Development Workshop, who will cut the plates, rafters and braces for the structure. That still leaves plenty of work for this phase; the pavilion is a very large, though not overly complex, structure. The structure will use 18,500 board feet of local hardwoods, fir for braces and rafters, in 438 pieces all together. Some 254 pieces will be cut in June, 184 (braces, rafters, plates) to be cut at the PDW in May. Logs for the Angola project.![]()
Professional skills to be reinforced, and rookie skills to be introduced, include:
Participants should come away from this event with a new appreciation for professional shop work in the portable power tool environment. Rookies and Pros who complete a full week of work will receive a Certificate of Participation from the TFG. This event will culminate in a large crane raising beginning approximately in the middle of the second week. We will need plenty of help and ‘heads-down” timberframing to meet this ambitious schedule, though we promise to leaven the mix with the usual assortment of timber framers from all over, and our special blend of exuberant camaraderie. Travel & AccommodationsAngola is a handsome town of 15,000 in the northeast corner of Indiana, at the confluence of Interstates 80 and 69, where Michigan, Ohio and Indiana converge. Fly to Fort Wayne (IN), Toledo (OH) or South Bend (IN) for regional airports. Consider Indianapolis or Columbus or Detroit, or even Chicago for a busier destination. Camping is available. Dress and pack camping gear accordingly. Dorm space is available for the duration of the project as well: non-smoking, double occupancy, bring your own bedding. For the most part we will be working undercover. The camping area is lovely area of the park shaded by giant oak trees, but it is exposed to wind and rain. Meals will be communal, served on the site. Breakfast, lunch and supper will be provided Monday through Saturday. Sundays, you are on your own. See these Websites for more information:
Participation RequirementsWe are looking for enthusiastic individuals of all skill levels. Rookies will pay a modest tuition, to offset instruction and supervision costs. Professional timber framers will need to submit a résumé or recommendation and bring their own tools. Please make sure that your health insurance is up to date, and that you have rugged clothes and boots, ear, eye, and head protection. A modest tool list and maps will be sent to all registrants. Prepare for long days of hard work and exuberant camaraderie. Call 603 835 2077 or write Joel McCarty for information. |
All participants will receive meals Monday through Saturday, hot showers and pastoral camping on site. We are looking for a total of 50 people on this large public job, in these three categories:
