Farm & Wilderness Dairy Barn
Small deck project, June 27-July 4, Plymouth, Vermont
This summer's Dairy Barn project is a great match between the Quaker-supported summer camps for kids and your Guild. We'll be interacting with literally hundreds of kids and families in scenic central Vermont as we hand raise this barn. This project continues our tradition of educating young people with hands-on projects like Gould Farm, Northfield Mount Harmen, Mountain School, COLTS, and the VMI spring events, including Cadet Trevor Mitchell who will be helping work the ropes.
Because we are working closely with lots of kids, the sponsor requires each attendee to submit his/her name for a background check. This is your call to action: all those who wish to participate must get on the list immediately - unfortunately, last minute walk-ons will not be welcomed to the closed campus.
On June 27 Alicia Hammarlund, Ellen Gibson, and Bryan Felice will join Joel and Randy and a couple Heartwood Apprentices at Farm & Wilderness to cut and install the main deck of the barn. We'd like to have another 5-6 volunteers join us for the fun. It will be a lot of hand cutting and mentoring younger people so bring a sense a humor. Call Joel immediately to be a part of this phase, ends July 4.
The main event will take place in Plymouth, Vermont August 5-13. We have space for 25 volunteers. The staff will include:
Alicia Hammarlund
Ellen Gibson - Carving
Rick Collins - Assembly
Adrienne Walker - Safety
Rocco Bellebuono
Ben Yoemans
Brian Felice
Grigg Mullen - Rigging
Joel McCarty
Randy Churchill - Project Manager
We'll interact with lots of campers as they come and go between their other activities, a steady stream of 30-40 kids are planned all the time. Most of the work will be with quiet and safe hand tools. Ellen will be focusing on carving themes and techniques, much more than most projects. Everyone is asked to bring their carving tools.
Raising this frame will be quite a community experience. The objective is to safely include as many people as possible. August 11 starts the Camp's Parent's Weekend so we'll put a couple hundred people on ropes and raise it that way. We're planning to use 2 gin poles hinged base plates. On August 12 the campers and families are busy with "Fair" so our crew will focus on safe climbing techniques and work positioning practices.
