The Guild is again teaming up with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) to offer a week-long timber framing workshop in East Texas this spring. This will be the fifth Guild workshop in East Texas and the third working with the TPWD.
The project will be a pavilion to provide classroom and meeting space at the Texas Inland Fisheries Center in Athens, Texas. It will complement the pavilion built on the same site in 2001 that serves as the entry and anchor for a marvelous wetlands interpretive trail. Like the 2001 pavilion, the new pavilion will be roughly the same size (28 x 40) but have a different design. Once again, we will use Southern yellow pine for the frame. The new pavilion will anchor the other end of the trail, near a small lake that provides habitat for waterfowl. It is a beautiful setting.
If past history is any indication, you can expect to be taught by some of the Guild's finest, to spend the week working alongside people as enthusiastic about timber framing as you are, and to build a beautiful timber frame in a great setting where it will serve many people over the years. Plus this workshop is happening at a perfect time of year. The trees and flowers will be in full bloom, the days will be warm (mid-70s) and the evenings mild (mid-50s). You can also expect some fine food (read "the best gumbo around").
Fee & Accommodations: The fee for the workshop is $600 for members and $675 for non-members. (The non-member rate includes a one-year membership in the Guild.) The fee includes materials, instruction, and lunch every day plus at least two evening meals, including a welcome dinner on Sunday evening. You are responsible for other meals and for housing (for campers, there will be camping on site; for others, we will arrange for discounts at a local hotel). You will also need to bring a complement of hand tools. A list will be provided upon registration.
Work and instruction will begin Monday morning. The raising will be done on Saturday.
These workshops tend to fill up, so to avoid missing out, get your plans in place and register early. You may register in the online store, or you may fax or mail the registration form.
Cancellation policy: If you need to cancel, tuition is refundable minus a $50 administrative fee if we're notified by March 27. If you cancel after that, the fee may be applied to another Guild event.
