Friday Morning, April 23
Thanks to an early arrival at the Providence airport, I was able to fly standby
through several of the southern states, arriving in Houston a full 2 hours ahead of schedule, though I have a nasty cough from the airline ventilation
system. Bonnie Gnehm's dad picked me up in his Texas Suburban and we drove across Texas in air-conditioned comfort, often going the wrong way on the myriad
interstates surrounding Houston. I finally arrived in The Woodlands in time to be greeted at the door by Will Beemer, with a phone in his hand.
I have spent the last two nights on Bonnie's couch. Last night we went out
for TexMex food so hot and Margaritas so cold that I had to remove my
glasses for fear that the freeze\thaw cycle would fracture them. Will
and I found a cigar shop, and then the Guild members started showing up at
Paul Cooper's. The Boy Scouts showed up with tents, and Lance Lee got stranded at the airport. Big Denny Hambruch showed up, and that comes with a funny
story... 75 degrees at night, in the 90's during the days.
All day back at the site, we have been moving timbers via trailer to the
slab. Hoooeee! It's hot. About 5 trailer loads of stuff have been hand loaded and unloaded by the timberframers, with some help from the students. Lots of great energy. A very fine bunch of students, and Simon is adept at motivating them. The TFG gang is highly animated, as well. Grigg Mullen and Dave Crocco brought Mike Goldberg, Peter Bull and the half trebuchet, rolling in at some small hour, but up with the chickens to help with the coffee.
Tomorrow we begin the raising with a prayer. Curtis Milton is on the case, and Will is everywhere. Simon laid everything out by himself. This should be interesting. I am confident that we will get through it, as we always do. -- Joel McCarty
