After offering a number of basic courses in Rottweil, Germany, the Gewerbe Akademie is providing an advanced level course for those who attended the basic level and for those timber framers who have experience in roof framing, drawing and math.
This three-week session will be presented from January 9-29, 2005 at the Akademie's excellent facility in Rottweil. The curriculum will include:

Complex roof framing

Dormers
-
Trusses in the traditional German, French and Italian style

More traditional Fachwerk
All parts would be at the masters level, including engineering and aspects of general building design.
This three-week class will provide a deep insight into compound and traditional frame work.

You will be guided through 30 hours of an intensive roof layout workshop. Hips, Valleys, Jacks, canted rafters etc. This part is meant to warm you up. Design and layout methods taught will be:
a) plumb - level [drafting] and
b) trig functions [math]
- You will get a deep insight into compound and roof design in another 30 hours concentrating on tricky dormers and roof add-ons. This based on the contents of Part 1.
- You will be introduced and guided through the design of various traditional bents and framework. Engineering aspects will be touched as well as design and joinery. 30 hours of intensive design, engineering and discussion of joinery.
- You will have an other 30 hours to put all your new knowledge into a sample building. Design from scratch, detailing, shop drawings. The instructors will watch you closely and show you tricks and tips to speed up and improve your work.
- Last but not least you will be introduced to Dietrich's 3D CAD/CAM design software, the standard design software used in Europe for high level timber framing. You will experience that the work of three weeks can be done in a 20 hour workshop. Design, detail and produce shop drawings + timber lists from a sample frame.

Fees: As in the basic course, the tuition, room and board for the entire session is $3,450. Deadline for registration is December 6, 2004. Attendance is limited, and you may register in the online store. We will charge the deposit of $250 now and the balance two weeks prior to the class start.
Cancellation policy: All course deposits and fees are fully refundable up until December 6, 2004, after which the deposit is non-refundable unless someone can be found to fill the vacated spot.
