Rendezvous at Gould Farm
July 15-30, 2000, Monterey, Massachusetts

Ground Breaking & Sponsors

Ground has broken at Gould Farm, site of the Guild's major raising this year. Guild member Phil Newey from South County Joiners in Great Barrington, Mass., is general contractor, Daniel Cryns of Gould Farm is project manager, and Joel McCarty is drawing the 36 x 56-ft. barn. The frame is a traditional American canted queen post and purlin design with common rafters; square rule layout will be used on the hemlock timbers.

Progress to Date
The concrete is in (except for the slab), and the foundation is backfilled. Cutting of the timbers is going on in a barn dedicated in October 1996 and built from timbers felled by a tornado a few years before; the barn was raised with the help of a group of Pennsylvania Amish. Below are some photos of the timber cutting, foundation and site work.

Barn

The barn where the timber framers are working was built following the 1995 Memorial Day tornado that roared through Monterey and did tremendous damage to the area's buildings and trees.

Wooden sign

Inside the barn is a carved wooden plaque that reads, "Dedicated October 6, 1996. This barn stands as a symbol of community cooperation in the prevailing spirit of Gould Farm. The lumber was milled from farm trees, felled by the Memorial Day tornado, 1995. The foundation was prepared by neighboring tradesmen. The barn was raised by volunteer labor of Amish and Mennonite men from Pennsylvania, New York, Virginia and Massachusetts, and neighbors under the auspices of Mennonite Brethren. ..."

The barn is set in the rolling hills of Monterey, Mass, with sheep and llamas providing pastoral ambience at the job site.
