Building a Timbered Windmill
Dispatches from the Frontier Photos and text by Joel McCarty
Background
Friday, June 2, 2000
A beautiful day, cooler than yesterday, overcast with a good stiff wind to discourage the bugs and disguise the sunburn. Work continues apace, with even more civilians wandering around the site than the day before. Guild members are pretty comfortable about answering questions and meeting people 'where they are.' It is now possible for us to feel like we're behind schedule, a position we're comfortable with. The windshaft is ready to go, thanks to David Crocco and his pals from the museum, who laborously fitted the alternating stipes of steel and maple that make the bearing.

The windshaft, which won't be installed today, as we're still chugging along on the bearing receivers.
