Workshop Report: Part 1

In this workshop participants will build two matching gates for the entrance and exit to the Japanese American Internment and Exclusion Memorial on Bainbridge Island. They will lay out and cut out all of the parts, primarily using hand tools and traditional joinery. The following text and photos were sent by David Blackwell.

Day one and all the guys and all the materials are here ... whew! The materials are gorgeous and the guys are ... um ... here. Planes are being tuned, and sticks are being layed out. The bad weather has left so we don't have to.

During day 1, the workshop focused on sharpening procedures so that everybody would have their tools ready for the job. Tomorrow we move on to a bit more tool tunage and then start on tenonism and mortising.

Despite a harsh environment and terrible weather, these participants manage to enjoy themselves.

A lovely reception at City Hall made us all feel welcome.
