Workshop Report: Part 11

Our early decision to assemble the roof structure on the ground prior to fitting on the eight columns by a single crane pick proved wise. The roof assembly was pretty fussy with all that perfect joinery. Without the need for staging or fall protection, we were able to install the red cedar ceiling boards and the plywood (over which the shakes will go) while working at waist height. It was a pleasure, and I am certain it went more quickly and to higher tolerances than it would have in the air.

Left: James Wiester celebrates our on-time performance, with the roof all rigged up and ready to go. The double columns and their seismic connections are visible in the foreground.

Above: Sneaking up on an eight-point landing.

Above: With a time-out for Tim Brennan (CA) to do just a little chisel work . . .

Below: Project Manager John Buday (L, WA) and local tool wizard Armistead Coleman offering guidance.

Followed by an anticlimactic transition from this . . .

. . . to this, with the rigging stowed and the ceiling boards in place.

By the end of the day, it looked like this, with felt paper in place, ready for the dinner tonight and the reception tomorrow.
