Mr. Joel C. McCarty, Executive Director
Timber Framers Guild
P.O. Box 60
Becket, Massachusetts 03602-3304

Dear Joel:

The gates and pavilion are beautiful and elegant, eliciting oohs and ahs from everyone. We are so grateful for the work done with such precision, teamwork, and care. Please thank all the men involved. We realize many took vacation time and time from their own businesses to participate. We are very thankful that Timber Framer John Buday learned of our endeavor, became actively involved, and submitted our project to your guild.

The memorial’s site is the exact location where Bainbridge Island families of Japanese descent were taken away from their homes at the beginning of World War II and relocated to the California desert. They were the first of thousands from the Western United States who were imprisoned without due process or trial. It is a significant part of history that is not widely told. We hope this memorial will remedy this in a quiet, peaceful way that will honor those who were exiled and also the Bainbridge Islanders who welcomed our return. The pavilion and gates fit right in and contribute so much to architect Johnpaul Jones’ beautiful design for the memorial.

Sincerely,
Lilly Kodama, for the
Bainbridge Island Japanese American Community
