Elk City Open Air Pavilion
October 16-23, 1999, Elk City, Idaho Project Photos When Idaho's Grangeville School District began planning the use of land adjoining the school for outdoor education classrooms, enthusiastic community participation in Elk City led to a much greater vision: a two-story 100' x 60' timber frame building that will house outdoor classrooms, a learning center, an auditorium, and a gathering space for both the school as well as the community. That building has been named the Community Education and Performing Arts Center (CEPAC). This October, to demonstrate demonstrate the process and product of timber framing to the community and to keep the momentum strong for building CEPAC, there will be a workshop to build an open air pavilion.
The Building
The project will be a 16' x 24' open air pavilion, which will sit at the connecting point of several interpretive trails on 20 acres of school land. The pavilion will be basically the same structure as the Pentatanguishine Pavilion, and the Effinger Project, designed by Ed Levin. It is on pp. 169-179 of the TFG Joinery & Design Workbook, and the finished building can be seen on the Guild web site, as the Effinger Project.
