Elk City Open Air Pavilion
October 16-23, 1999, Elk City, Idaho
Project Photos

When Idaho's Grangeville School District began planning the use of land adjoining the school for outdoor education classrooms, enthusiastic community participation in Elk City led to a much greater vision: a two-story 100' x 60' timber frame building that will house outdoor classrooms, a learning center, an auditorium, and a gathering space for both the school as well as the community. That building has been named the Community Education and Performing Arts Center (CEPAC). This October, to demonstrate demonstrate the process and product of timber framing to the community and to keep the momentum strong for building CEPAC, there will be a workshop to build an open air pavilion.

The Building Pavilion Drawing

The project will be a 16' x 24' open air pavilion, which will sit at the connecting point of several interpretive trails on 20 acres of school land. The pavilion will be basically the same structure as the Pentatanguishine Pavilion, and the Effinger Project, designed by Ed Levin. It is on pp. 169-179 of the TFG Joinery & Design Workbook, and the finished building can be seen on the Guild web site, as the Effinger Project.

The Town
Elk City Elk City (population 400) is located 50 miles east of Grangeville, Idaho. Surrounded entirely by National Forest land, Elk City has a long history of mining and timber harvesting. This heritage is the source of intense community pride.

Rendezvous
This project will be run as a timber frame rendezvous, in which members of the Timber Framers Guild come to work together and have fun while helping a local community. There will not be instructors per se, but almost everyone ends up being something of a teacher. Local workers will be on hand as well, and are excited about the opportunity to try their hand at timberframing.

Tools
Bring your own hand tools for your own use. Anything extra you can bring that you are willing to loan out is welcome. The community will also be purchasing several sets of hand tools. The larger tools (cut off saws, ladders, scaffolding, electric cords, chain saws, etc.) seem to be well in hand, but if you have any of these available, please let us know.

Room and Board
The community of Elk City will cover the room and board of Guild members who come work. Most of us will be staying in a large house a few miles from the building site. Other buildings are available, as well as a place to work should the weather turn on us.

Commitment
It is important that we know how many people are coming, both so we can plan accommodations and make sure we have enough help to complete the project in the time allotted. Please send in the form below as soon as you can! We'll look forward to seeing you there.
