This spring's workshop and rendezvous is the Project Horizon Shelter for Victims of Domestic Abuse. The Virginia Military Institute (VMI) and Washington and Lee University (WLU) student chapters of Habitat for Humanity are coordinating the work. The event took place March 12-23 in Lexington, Virginia.
Several Guild members and designers, including Paul Freeman, Ed Levin, Noel Chavez and Chris Peterson, produced the timber frame drawings under the coordination of local architect Eli Fishpaw and Andrea Warchaizer.
Guild instructors joined Executive Directors Will
Beemer and Joel McCarty in leading a community work weekend on March 12-14
to begin timber layout and cutting. Guild members and members of the
student chapters of Habitat for Humanity from the Virginia Military Institute and Washington and Lee University also helped out.
The raising itself was a public event during the weekend of March 19 - 21 and included the workshop instructors and students, Habitat volunteers and as many members of the Guild as could attend.
Timber framers also participated by pre-cutting braces and other small timbers and shipping them to Lexington prior to the raising. This was reminiscent of the previous Habitat raisings in Pennsylvania in 1989.
