Fourteen years ago, the Traditional Timber Frame Research Advisory Group (TTRAG) held its most wellattended conference near Portsmouth, New Hampshire. TTRAG will return to Portsmouth this April 13–15. This town is loaded with interesting historic architecture and lots of great pubs and restaurants. This year’s tour will be at the Strawbery Banke Museum, an open air museum located in the historic district. There are thirtyseven historic buildings at the site, maintained in various periods of interpretation ranging from the seventeenth to nineteenth centuries.
No buses this year! The museum is within walking distance of the hotel or a short drive, and parking is ample, so you can choose how to get there. In addition to the conference events, we will be setting up a self-guided tour of other historic frames in the region for those who might come a bit early on Friday. Plan to spend some extra time here if you can. You will not be bored! As you would expect, there will be a great group of speakers this year to present on local (and not-so-local) history and craft traditions. Among the speakers this year will be Peter Follansbee. You may have seen Peter on PBS’s The Woodwright’s Shop or read some of his work. Peter has inspired many of us over the years and will offer some demonstrations of early woodworking techniques in addition to his talk.
Nate Piper, of Piper Boatworks, runs the boat shop at the Strawbery Banke and will be on hand to present. He also plans to have his shop open at the site when we tour. Other confirmed speakers include Tad Baker, Scott Landis, Jan Lewandoski, and a round table discussion moderated by Andrea Warchaizer. We are still confirming speakers, so be sure to keep checking your Weekly Guild Notes and the website for updates. Bios and presentation summaries will be posted soon, but you can register to attend now! You can also sign up for updates on the conference—we’ll be sharing speaker features, places to visit, and things to do in and around Portsmouth.
