2024 Timber Framers Guild Conference

John Miller

Cascade Joinery, Owner

I was introduced to timberwork in 1988, starting as a joiner with Blue Ridge Timber Frame in Christiansburg, Virginia. I helped start Dreaming Creek Timber Frame Homes in 1991. When I left the company in 2006, we had about 60 employees and were running a CNC timber-cutting machine, producing mostly traditionally styled frames.

I came to Cascade Joinery in 2006 as one of the owners and have managed the business since then. We supply custom timberwork in all styles for residential, municipal, and commercial projects to clients up and down the West Coast, including Hawaii and Alaska. Along the way I have served as a compound joinery instructor for the TFG, worked on numerous TFG projects, and served on the board of the Timber Frame Business Council and the Guild.

Presentation

Opportunities in Non-Traditional Timberwork
During this session, we will survey the scope of modern timberwork, the types of work being done, the materials used, and the tools necessary to perform the work. Along the way, we will discuss the challenges in client education related to modern timberwork and deepen our understanding of glue-laminated timber grades and specifications. We will also review lessons learned and the challenges in successfully bidding on, winning, and performing this type of work, using examples from the experiences of Cascade Joinery.
