Algonquin College (Perth Campus & Heritage Institute) - Basics of Building a Log Cabin

Building a traditional dovetailed log cabin using hand hewn logs can be a rewarding endeavour that leaves a legacy for generations to come. Students learn to work from a set of drawings, to hand hew logs, to produce traditional dovetail joinery and pole rafters, layout, cutting, and assembly procedures, proper safe use and storage of hand and power tools, and safe raising/rigging techniques. Students apply theoretical and practical skills to build, as a class, a new 12′ x 12′ hand hewn log structure complete with pole rafters using traditional dovetail joinery methods and materials.
