This year the Guild will take the Community Building Workshop program to Independence, Virginia, for the fabrication of a farmers market pavilion.
George Morrison (Morrison Building Company) and Patrick Shunney (Shunney Timberworks) are managing the project, which is comprised of 24,000 board feet of circle sawn white oak, 132' long and 40' wide, 12 clerestory bents with tons of purlins and braces. Bottom-splined girts, wedged through-tenons on the tie-beams, and gable-end splines will add some spice to the massive posts and rafters. An accessory bandshell frame will be built as well, approximately 30' x 30' with a butterfly roof and scarf-jointed bottom plate.
George and Patrick are looking for forty-five volunteers and a committed team of instructors for this 10-day workshop, which will run October 1 through 10.
Contact George about joining as an instructor; registration will be coming soon for volunteers. You must be a Guild member to participate! (Join the Guild HERE.) We know how much everyone wants to get back to these Guild builds, so be sure to register early to secure your spot - we have a feeling they will fill up fast!
We always like to tempt Guild volunteers with good food, and what better place to get it than at a farmers market? Gesche Morley writes, "The Independence Farmer’s Market, which is providing meals and snacks for the raising, isn’t just a bunch of folks selling produce once a week. They are truly committed and passionate about providing everyone with GOOD food. Good food means it’s good for you AND it tastes really good. Food has to do both. Period. We are so excited and can’t wait to supply the framers with the very best food they’ve ever had at a raising. Chef Jen (and she really is a chef) is hard at work developing menus, Susan is recruiting volunteers, and Michelle and Gesche are running logistics. We are Farmers Feeding Framers." All meals, campsites, shower and bath facilities, and parking are provided by the town, and RV parking may be available with some local campsites. Contact firstname.lastname@example.org for more information.
Timbers are ordered, site work is starting soon, and the locals are very excited to have a town full of timber framers. We look forward to welcoming Guild members to Independence in October!
Registration is now closed.
