Estonian Windmills
In May 2022, carpenters from seven countries descended on the remote island of Vilsandi to assist in the restoration of three 19th-century windmills. Vilsandi is 6km long, and has only 7 year-round inhabitants, but this lonely island is home to a handful of stunningly beautiful traditional Estonian post mills. These structures are simple timber frames that house remarkably inventive mechanisms almost entirely constructed out of wood.

The project was led by master millwright Viktor Tammsaar, and organized under the aegis of Vanaajamaja, an institution dedicated to preserving and teaching traditional Estonian building craft.

Miles lives in Huntington, Vermont, where he runs Vermont Heavy Timber. His passions include restoration carpentry, timber frame joinery, animal husbandry, and molinology.
