TFG Discount - Colorado Japanese Timber Framing Workshop - May 8-20 2025 - Sauna

Come spend the begining of a wonderful summer at New Sky Ranch in southern Colorado and learn the fundamentals of Japanese Woodworking and Timber Framing. During this 11 day, all inclusive workshop, taught by Jason Fox of Never Stop Building, students will receive training in chisel set up, sharpening techniques, sawing with hand and power toos, joinery cutting, and plane set up and use. During the second half of the workshop, we will work together to cut and raise the frame, walls, and roof for a wood fired sauna. With luck we'll get it built "enough" to relax insite after the hard but rewarding work. 

This workshop will focus on techniques applicable to both east and western timber frame cosntruction and we will practice a variety of mortise and tenon joints and a simplified Japanese roof system. All meals and cozy glamping accomodations provided as part of tuition.

• Setting up and a Japanese chisel.
• Water stone freehand sharpening techniques.
• Understanding timber frame center-line layout marking and the principles of cutting joinery.
• Basic handsaw instruction
• Cutting several types of mortise and tenon joints including blind, through, pegged, and wedged.
• Use of the handsaw, power saw, drill and chisel to chop a mortise and cut a tenon.
• Joinery time trials.
• Optional Japanese hand plane instruction.
• Timber frame assembly and finishing practices.
