North House Folk School

Started in 1997, North House Folk School is an educational non-profit organization on the shore of Lake Superior in Grand Marais, MN. We foster a non-competitive learning environment devoted to teaching traditional northern craft with an emphasis on the Scandinavian "folkehøjskole" where learning is valued for its own sake. North House offers over 400 courses year round in 18 craft themes from blacksmithing to boatbuilding to fiber arts, but one of our signature themes since the beginning has been timber framing. North House timber framing courses include Basic Timber Framing, in which the class builds one timber frame as a group; to Build Your Own Small or Large frame in which you learn all the techniques and take your timber frame home; plus timbered benches, German timber framing, Norwegain Grindbygg timber framing, and more. Course dates vary each year, please visit the North House website to learn more, or call to request a course catalog via mail.

The mission of the North House Folk School is:
to enrich lives and build community
     by teaching traditional northern crafts
     in a student-centered learning environment
that inspires the hands, the heart and the mind.
