Guild Travel: France

The Timber Framers Guild and Will Gusakov of Goosewing Timberworks are teaming up to offer a weeklong tour in Normandy, France, March 23-30.

We'll spend our week visiting various sites in Normandy. We can expect to take in a broad slice of the history and culture of the region: from historic timber frames dating from the medieval period onwards, to the ongoing hand tool reconstruction of William the Conqueror's Viking ship, to celebrating the Feast Day of St Joseph (patron saint of carpenters) at a party at the Ateliers Desmonts workshop.

We'll spend a day in Rouen guided by Francois Calame, founder of Charpentiers sans Frontieres (Carpenters without Borders). Our day in Rouen will include a visit to the city's world-famous guitarde dormers and a special-access visit into the roof framing of the 14th-century Abbatiale Saint-Ouen. We'll visit a contemporary timber frame job site, medieval Templar tithe barns, Renaissance-era timbered market halls, castles and abbeys and vernacular farms, the seaside towns of the Cote Fleurie, and enjoy the beautiful landscapes of Normandy in springtime. We will also be sure to visit some local markets to get a sense of a real French marché, and have some free time in cities and towns for folks to explore.

And did we mention the food? We'll enjoy a mix of catered and restaurant meals that will showcase the cuisine of the country and region: Normandy is known for its apples and cider, cheeses, and fresh seafood. Lodging will be in simple, historic guesthouses in a rural setting.

The cost for participants is $3,000 and includes all in-country accommodations, transport, meals, and admissions, beginning March 23 and ending March 30. Participants will be responsible for arranging their own transportation to and from France.

Register now or hold your spot by making a non-refundable deposit of $500. Remaining balance will be due February 1, and no refunds will be available after February 14. Please contact the office with questions or for assistance: info@tfguild.org or 833-862-7376.
