Timber Framing Workshop with Vermont Youth Conservation Corps

rendering of outdoor kitchen structure for Vermont Youth Conservation Corps

We have an exclusive opportunity for Guild members to join timber frame apprentices from the Vermont Youth Conservation Corps (VYCC) for a weeklong workshop with instructors Eliot Lothrop, Oz Grinager, and Dan Lee, September 14-18.

Apprentices and Guild members will gather to cut and raise an 18' x 36' outdoor kitchen at the Richmond, Vermont, VYCC campus.

About the VYCC Timber Frame Pre-Apprentice Program

The VYCC Timber Frame Pre-Apprentice Program is a new initiative and evolved through a multi-year campus development project intended to add crew housing, enhance training space, increase 4-season program capability, and restore historic buildings in the process.

Pre-Apprentices gain immersive hands-on experience over a 21-week season under the mentorship of three highly skilled timber frame instructors who have helped design the program. The Outdoor Kitchen will serve as the main gathering and food preparation space for crews living in six new cabins, also built by our timber frame crew in 2026. In addition to serving crew needs, it will offer space for teaching, hosting outdoor events, and meetings for the VYCC.

Over its 40-year history, VYCC crews have completed thousands of conservation projects around Vermont and neighboring states. Corps members work and learn together in a collaborative crew environment where they gain skills, build community, and have a positive impact on the land. Projects include trail building, carpentry, invasive plant management, forestry, sustainable agriculture, culinary sciences, and more. Crews build technical project skills, and develop a wide range of transferable skills by working on a team in a professional setting on rigorous and demanding projects.
