Ariel Schecter

I grew up in the Hudson River Valley in New York with aspirations of being an architect, tirelessly obsessed with Lincoln Logs and Knex projects. I went on to study structural engineering in college, but yearned to also work with my hands and feel those calculations embodied in a material form. At 23 years old, I stumbled by luck into a week-long timber framing workshop and quickly discovered how much there is to love about this work - the tools, the camaraderie, the math made manifest in structure, the dignity of using simple and natural materials to make beautiful buildings.

The Guild has been a pillar of community and information that has shaped my 12+ years as a timber framer to a large degree. I went to my first conference and took a few Heartwood classes in scribing and stereotomy back in 2015 - and now I'm honored to be teaching those subjects at Heartwood and presenting my work at TFG conferences 10 years later. It is hard to imagine my career at all without the Guild and its publications, gatherings, and networks that have supported my growth as a carpenter and even more broadly as a person.

In 2024, I started my own company, Woodpecker, LLC, after a decade of timber framing in central Vermont. I am focused on design, drafting, stereotomy, scribing, and teaching workshops ranging from beginner level to advanced. I am also passionate about creating accessibility for women, queer people, people of color, and other minorities within our trade. I am honored to fill this vacancy on the board and serve a community that has given so much to me over the years.
