In our ongoing effort to squeeze as much fun and learning as possible from each Community Building Project, we are proud to present a two-day intensive scribing workshop. The Kayak Point shelter frames offer many opportunities to learn these skills, and we offer this workshop to anyone wanting to dive deeper into scribing methods and practice.
This workshop will cover advanced material and is suited to professional carpenters or enthusiastic amateurs. Traditional European scribe layout skills will be practiced, with one-on-one coaching. You will work on your own timbers for one of the roof trusses in the project, and the workshop is structured for a pair of participants to work together to lay out one truss. You will perform the entire lay-up and layout process. We will not cut any joinery in this workshop. Subsequent cutting and installation will be done during the Community Building Project; if you attend the CBP, you will be able to cut your own layout.
The workshop will run for two days immediately before the Community Building Project, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on July 15 and 16. There are camping facilities available, including showers. A light breakfast and lunch will be provided. Evening meals are not provided, but we will attempt to coordinate a communal dining experience at a restaurant or possibly barbecue on site.
If you register for this workshop, you will also be guaranteed a place on the volunteer team for the Kayak Point Community Building Project. If you wish to attend the workshop but not the CBP, please register for the workshop only. If you wish to attend both events, you must register for both events.

The three structures of this project are 16’ x 24’ and two bays. Each one is different from the others and features scissor, queen post, and king post trusses, and three different purlin and rafter systems.
The design of the frames provides opportunities for learning in areas such as scribe layout, curved braces, and alternative roof systems design and construction.
There are only 16 places for this workshop, allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.
The deadline for workshop registrations is Sunday, May 16, 2026.
