Anatomy of a Covered Bridge
Rehabilitation of the Rudolph & Arthur Covered Bridge in Lincoln University, PA In 2021, the Historic Rudolph & Arthur Covered Bridge was washed off its abutments in the remnant of Hurricane Ida and none of the original structure was recovered. Lancaster County Timber Frames was selected to manufacture and install a reproduction, built in the same configuration as the original. Using pressure treated Southern Yellow Pine, the 80 foot Burr- Arch Truss was cut and pre-fit in our shop. In the Summer of 2025, the completed timbers were delivered to the site where the trusses were assembled and installed on the new abutments. Highlights include: how to predict camber deflection, rigging plans and how to negotiate with DOT inspectors. Joe McCarthy and Josh Coleman will share pictures and stories of the process from beginning to end that will, once again, amuse and amaze.
