Hosted this year at the JST Detroit Engineering Center in Farmington Hills (about 30 minutes from the Conference venue), the TFEC Symposium (Wednesday, October 16) will include a bonus half-day tour of the venue, designed by Ryuichi Ashizawa Architects (Osaka, Japan). The facility consists of seven unique timber frames, with a design principle of melding Japanese craft with American carpentry practices. Will Denton IV of Rocky Mountain Joinery Center has been on-site working on all timber-related aspects of the project and will conduct this tour on Thursday morning, providing us with unique insights and an insider's view.
The Symposium sessions will include a presentation by Joe Miller on the design of the JST campus and a presentation from Elyse Levy, a senior engineer with ICC Evaluation Service. In addition to our regular sessions where all attendees gather together to learn, the Symposium will offer two afternoon tracks. Each track will feature two presentations, with one suited to intermediate practitioners and the other focused on other topics of interest. In response to requests from our membership and the broader timber framing community, the intermediate track presentations will include "Wood Science for Structural Engineers" and "Timber Frame Design for Structural Engineers." Expert track presentations will expect a higher level understanding of structural engineering with wood.

Are you a timber framer who wants to up your modeling game? During this workshop, you will learn how to create detailed 3D and extract all the data needed to bring your project to life, from list to dimensioned drawings. With a basic timber frame exercise, you will learn how to start a project in cadwork 3D, adding new elements as complex as hip and valley rafters using the roof module, and manage complex connections (wood-to-wood connections, fasteners, etc.). Once the model is complete, we will see how to extract data to bill of materials and cut lists and then finish with a shop drawing export, allowing you to quickly generate auto-dimensioned drawings for each component. This workshop takes place on Wednesday, October 16, and on the morning of October 17, and will be followed by a 2-month trial. During this trial, you will also have access to tutorial videos should you wish to learn more about cadwork, and access to the support service during that period (10 hours max). A complimentary lunch will be served on Wednesday during the workshop. Space is limited to 8 people. Learn more HERE.
